Guía legal para emprendimientos sociales en América Central

July 2020: We are excited to share with you this “Legal Guide for Social Enterprises in Central America”, a collaboration between the Thomson Reuters Foundation – TrustLaw, Alterna and Central Law, who donated their time and expertise to produce this resource.

Around the world, social entrepreneurship is thriving. More and more organisations are taking a market-based approach to find sustainable solutions and have a positive social impact. Central America is not the exception. Therefore, it is important to inform about the existing legal systems, on the one hand and to analyse the possibility of improving them on the other, in order to assist these social entrepreneurs in generating impact.

The Thomson Reuters Foundation has always championed the emerging impact economy. A key priority for TrustLaw, the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s global pro bono service, is to support innovative organisations who are addressing environmental, humanitarian and social problems across the globe. We are continuously inspired at the passion, innovation and resilience of these businesses.

We know very well that the legal structure that entrepreneurs choose for their company can have a significant influence on their ability to achieve social change. The guide identifies the characteristics of the different legal structures available, including recommendations for each country. This Guide also includes brief guidelines on trademark and labour law to help entrepreneurs guarantee the proper functioning and promotion of their social business.

We hope that this guide becomes a valuable tool to support social entrepreneurs in Central America.
